TWO CSUSB STUDENTS RECEIVE ACADEMIC RESILIENCY FUND SCHOLARSHIPS

In an effort to retain students and provide encouragement toward graduation, the Academic Resiliency Scholarship Fund was created to provide a financial incentive to CSUSB undergraduate students who have been placed on academic probation or have been subject to dismissal from the university. Students have the opportunity to apply for a scholarship after they have met a minimum academic achievement level of 3.2 GPA for a specific quarter.  Qualifying students will receive a $500 scholarship award after the quarter.

For Spring 2011, the first recipient is junior and Political Science major, Thomas Fuentes.  He was subject to dismissal after Winter 2004 with a CSUSB GPA below 2.0 and dropped out of the university.  After attending San Bernardino Valley College, Thomas was given an opportunity to return to CSUSB and continue his education on a probation contract for the Winter 2011 term.  He earned at 3.57 quarter GPA.  Since his CSUSB GPA was still below 2.0, he was required to sign another probation contract for the Spring 2011 term.  He earned 12 units and a 3.75 spring GPA and is now in good academic standing.
In a letter which asks about his resiliency, he states, “It is no longer acceptable to me to be locked into a dead end job that serves only as a means to barely pay the bills each month.  I am compelled to have a career that will allow my family to be more financially secure allowing them to focus on their own goals and endeavors instead of the ensuing pitfalls that may endanger our family.  I am compelled to find a profession that will enable me to make a difference with my community and inspire others.  I hope to achieve this by becoming a school teacher.”

The second recipient is senior and Liberal Studies major, Parri Gareau. After Winter 2010, Parri was below 2.0 CSUSB GPA as a junior without completing her remedial math requirement.  In the Fall 2010 quarter, she was given another opportunity to raise her GPA and continue with her math remediation.  She completed both and continued to raise her GPA and passed her general education math requirement in Winter 2011.  For Spring 2011, her CSUSB GPA was still below 2.0 and another probation contract was signed.  With 16 units attempted, she earned a 4.0 GPA for the spring and made the Dean’s List.  Parri is now in good academic standing.  In June 2011, she passed the CBEST on her first attempt.
She states, “In 2001, I was diagnosed with Type I diabetes.  For years, I had struggled with maintenance of my disease and when my grades began to slip there was a direct relation to my health.  In the fall of 2007, I was hospitalized for the first time due to my disease. I had entered a state of diabetic-ketoacidosis, or a coma like state brought on by elevated blood sugar levels in diabetics.”

“In the fall of 2009, I was admitted to the hospital a second time.  Doctors diagnosed me as having the Swine Flu. Unfortunately, I have also had an allergic reaction to one of the flu medications I had been prescribed and wound up in anaphylactic shock as well as developing diabetic-ketoacidosis, pneumonia, and a staph infection in my lungs.  I was intubated and kept in the ICU for two weeks before being released.”
“Upon my release, I had an epiphany; if I don’t get my life and my priorities on track, I’m never going to be healthy of finish my degree.”

Both of these students did not receive financial aid and have been paying for their own education.  The university, Undergraduate Studies, and Advising and Academic Services congratulate them for their academic and personal life resiliency.
Individuals or organizations interested in contributing to The Academic Resiliency Scholarship Fund to financially encourage more California State University San Bernardino students, can contribute to the CSUSB Philanthropic Foundation (UEC) designating the Academic Resiliency Scholarship Fund as the program.  Please read more about the program at http://www-ugs.csusb.edu/advising/arsf/

Academic Resliency Scholarship Fund

At CSUSB, each quarter, over 1000 undergraduate students fall below a 2.0 grade point average.  These students are placed on academic probation or are subject to dismissal. Registration holds are placed on their records and thereby, required to meet with a  professional advisor in Advising & Academic Services.  They will be monitored on their academic progress through a signed Administrative Contract involving the student and the advisor.  The student will be required to repeat previously failed courses, reduce course load, meet with their department faculty advisor and raise their grade point average.  It also recommends that the student carefully examine their time studying,  work hours and other extra-curricular activities.  Recommendations are often made to reduce work hours, contact the CSUSB Learning Center for tutorial help, or visit our Career Development Center.

During our contract discussion, we discover the root of the problem related to the student’s low academic performance.    Often, a personal crisis coupled or the need to work extra hours becomes a major concentration and distraction issue.  The advisor will recommend the student to meet with a personal counselor at CSUSB’s Psychological Counseling Center or seek other personal guidance assistance.
In an effort to retain students and provide additional motivation toward graduation, the Academic Resiliency Scholarship Fund has been created to provide a financial incentive to CSUSB undergraduate students who have been placed on academic probation or are subject to dismissal from the university.  Students will have the opportunity to apply for a grant after they have met a minimum academic achievement level of 3.2 GPA for a specific quarter.  Qualifying students will receive awards ranging from $200 to $1000.

Priority will be given to students who are not receiving financial aid and are working in order to pay for their education.

QUALIFYING FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP

1) Student must be a matriculated CSUSB undergraduate student who indicated on their Administrative Probation Contract that they would strive to meet the minimum 3.2 GPA for a specific quarter.

2)  Student must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units applying toward graduation units for the quarter he or she has signed the contract.

3)  Once fulfilling #1 and #2 requirements at the end of the quarter, an application form and letter of interest will be completed by the student.  These two documents will be reviewed by the Advising and Academic Services staff team to determine if the student will receive the grant.

4)  Priority will be given to students who are not receiving financial aid and are working in order to pay for their education.  Students receiving financial aid can apply, however, if selected, may reduce his or her total financial aid package.
